Financial Literacy for Children Workshop

Aug 05, 2017

In spite of how advanced (or well-read) we are, not many parents are willing to talk to their children about the subject of money (to be honest some people don’t know where to start; they are hoping the Children will find out about it, just like they themselves did).

Given that “How to make money or to be financially independent” is NOT taught in schools. I took it upon myself do something about it last year. On December 27, 2016, I decided to coach 15 children ranging between the ages of 4 to 12 about the subject of Money! And boy was it an eye-opener for me and the children.

Here are some of my findings:

  1. Out of the 15 kids, only 8 had bank accounts (Nigerian Banks, there lies potential customers waiting!)
  2. 1 out of the children had never heard about a bank account (don’t worry it was not the youngest child that indicated this lack of knowledge)
  3. Some of the children were well off to a good start: Some of them even told me how you could make money from RECYCLING. So when next I take the financial literacy class (that portion has been updated)
  4. Parents were willing to allow their children attend the class during the holiday when they should be relaxing (I trust they would have sensed the benefits)

Message for anyone reading this post:

  1. Have you started discussions with your children about money? If not start NOW (Don’t be like your parent)
  2. Do they know how you, the parent earn money, that you use for paying for their school fees and buying those lovely toys and clothing for them? Perhaps NOT. Start NOW
  3. What are their held beliefs about Money?. My son said “Money is Evil” yet the cheeky fellow wants me to buy him a “Smart Wheel Balance” – Ask your children about their beliefs about Money you will be glad or shocked that you did.
  4. What do they think about charities or giving generally (One of the Children said he would hide his money in a soak away – Don’t know where he got such a crazy idea came from?)
  5. Outside Academics; Money, Sex, Marriage and Parenting are not really taught in schools (whether we admit it or not, these things do play an important role in the lives of people). Do you have any plans to discuss these items with your children during the various stages of their lives? If No, please make a plan today.

It is never too late to START. Do not be like our parents. They (your children) will thank you for it.

I intend to conduct more of similar training this year watch this space.

If you would like me to teach a group of children financial literacy, kindly book me here.
